Installing an IKO Cambridge Roofing System over a Fully Re-Sheeted Roof Deck

5086 Shirley Avenue, North Vancouver, BC V7R 3W6

In this case study, we install Peter’s Malarkey Vista roof over new plywood, with a 50-year Emerald Pro warranty.

Project Context

Peter’s re-roof was planned with a clear priority: if the existing asphalt roof was coming off, it was the right time to improve what sat beneath the new shingles too.

The project called for new 3/8-inch plywood across the entire roof deck, giving the new Malarkey Vista system a fresh, consistent surface from edge to edge. From there, the roof would be rebuilt with extra waterproofing at the eaves and valleys, new perimeter metal, and new flashing around the vents and plumbing penetrations.

Peter chose the Malarkey system with 50-year Emerald Pro warranty coverage, which made the preparation beneath the shingles an important part of the investment. The goal was a roof where the foundation, waterproofing, ventilation details, and shingles were all planned together.

The Challenge

Peter’s roof replacement was a valuable opportunity to start the new system on a completely renewed surface.

Once the old asphalt roofing was removed and the deck inspected, we could install new 3/8-inch plywood across the entire roof. This gave the waterproofing membranes, underlayment, and new shingles a consistent base, rather than putting the whole investment into the finished surface alone.

The roof also had many penetrations serving different purposes: B-vents, plumbing stacks, attic ventilation, and exhaust outlets. Each needed to be properly integrated into the new roof. Handling them at the same time meant the new system could be built around renewed flashings instead of carrying aging components forward.

Why The Client Chose Us?

Peter chose a roofing scope that put as much attention into preparation and detailing as into the finished shingles.

Vantage Roofing’s plan included full-deck plywood, extra ice and water protection at the eaves and valleys, new perimeter metal, reinforced penetrations, and renewed ventilation and exhaust flashings.

Combined with the Malarkey Vista system and its 50-year Emerald Pro warranty, the plan gave Peter a clear approach: prepare the roof properly first, then build the new system on top of it.

How We Responded?

Our team began by walking the property to identify potential hazards and set up the safety and property-protection measures needed before removal started, including groundsheets around the West Vancouver home.

After stripping away the existing asphalt roofing, we inspected the exposed deck and installed 3/8-inch plywood across the entire roof surface. The new roof was then built up in layers:

Waterproofing: Malarkey Arctic Seal® along the eaves and valleys, followed by high-performance 30lb synthetic underlayment.

Perimeter metal: new 26-gauge drip edges at all gables.

Roofing system: Malarkey Smart Start starter shingles, Malarkey Vista® AR shingles, and Malarkey RidgeFlex® hip and ridge shingles.

Penetrations: peel-and-stick reinforcement around roof protrusions, new B-vent flashings with storm collars, and new lead flashings at the plumbing penetrations.

Wall intersections: diverter flashings where the gable ends meet the walls.

Ventilation and exhaust: new attic exhaust vents and new goose-neck exhaust vents where required.

Once the roofing was complete, our team removed the debris and protective materials, then finished with a final sweep, rake, and magnetic cleanup around the property to pick up stray nails.

The Results?

Peter’s finished roof includes a major improvement that will mostly stay out of sight: a newly sheeted deck beneath the Malarkey Vista system.

That fresh plywood is the starting point for the new waterproofing, underlayment, shingles, flashings, and ventilation components. Arctic Seal® adds protection at the eaves and valleys, while renewed flashing around the plumbing, exhaust, and B-vent penetrations covers the many points where the roof has to transition around other components.

The completed project gives Peter a roof renewed from the deck upward, backed by Vantage Roofing’s 10-year workmanship warranty and Malarkey’s 50-year Emerald Pro warranty.
