Project Context
Corinne wanted more than a simple shingle replacement. Her goal was a healthier, more efficient roofing system that would provide long-term protection, improve attic airflow, and bring additional natural light into her Delta home. Rather than just installing new shingles, the project focused on upgrading the entire roof assembly: waterproofing, ventilation, flashings, and the integration of a Velux Sun Tunnel.
The scope included removal and disposal of the existing asphalt roofing, a comprehensive roof deck inspection, and installation of a complete Malarkey system: Arctic Seal® ice & water barrier, high-performance synthetic underlayment, Smart Start® starter shingles, Vista® AR architectural shingles, and RidgeFlex® hip and ridge shingles. New 26-gauge drip edges, upgraded flashings, and reinforced penetrations were installed throughout.
The opportunity was to improve far more than the roof covering. Corinne’s existing ventilation could be enhanced to support better attic airflow—critical for the long-term performance of the new roof and for reducing heat and moisture buildup. At the same time, she wanted to add daylight to her living room without the complexity of a traditional skylight.
Integrating a sun tunnel into a reroofing project required careful coordination: the roof opening, flashing, secondary waterproofing, and interior tunnel had to be fully integrated with the new roofing system to ensure excellent weather protection and maximum light transmission.
Corinne chose Vantage Roofing Ltd. because we offered a complete-system approach instead of a “shingles-only” replacement. She appreciated that our proposal addressed ventilation, waterproofing, flashings, and roof penetrations—and that we could incorporate the Velux Sun Tunnel into the same project.
By completing everything together, every component could be properly integrated into the new roofing system, reducing the risk of leaks and ensuring that ventilation and daylighting upgrades worked in harmony with the shingles and underlayments.
Our team began by removing the existing roofing materials and inspecting the roof deck before installing the complete Malarkey roofing system. We installed Malarkey Arctic Seal® ice & water barrier in leak-sensitive areas, followed by high-performance 30lb synthetic underlayment across the deck.
Next, we installed Malarkey Smart Start® starter shingles, Malarkey Vista® AR architectural shingles, and Malarkey RidgeFlex® hip and ridge shingles, along with new 26-gauge drip edges. Ventilation upgrades included new intake openings along the roof edge, rooftop intake vents, additional attic exhaust vents, new B-vent flashings and storm collars, plumbing stack vents, premium lead plumbing flashings, goose-neck exhaust vents, and diverter flashings at all gable ends. All roof penetrations were reinforced with peel-and-stick underlayment.
For the Velux Sun Tunnel, we created a new roof opening and framing, installed manufacturer-approved flashing, added secondary waterproofing around the tunnel, and completed the interior reflective tunnel and ceiling diffuser. Final weatherproofing and a performance inspection ensured the system was fully integrated. Throughout, the property was protected with groundsheets, a dump trailer handled debris, and we finished with a thorough sweep, rake, and magnetic nail cleanup.
Corinne now has a complete roofing system designed for long-term protection and improved home performance. The upgraded ventilation promotes healthier attic airflow, while the new Velux Sun Tunnel brings additional natural light into the living room, creating a brighter, more inviting space.
